A large country that encompasses different customs, religions, and culture, India has been known for its diversity. There are variations in terms of tradition, way of life, and even fashion among the Indian people.

As India gained independence from its colonizers, the fashion industry in India has made considerable impact on how people dress themselves. Traditional ways of putting on salwar kameez and saris gave way to modern trends and styles. Early India saw women who wore cotton blouses with full sleeves that had no embellishments or embroidery at all. Nowadays, with the influx of Western influence, there are different styles of blouses as well, such as halter-neck, puffed sleeves, deep necks, and lycra-fitted blouses. The average length of blouses has decreased as well.

The fashion industry in India draws its inspiration from the evolution of Indian cinema. Bollywood was a commanding presence in terms of lifestyle and fashion sense. For instance, a sari wrapped tightly around one's body is known as "Mumtaj style sari."

Salwar kameez has also undergone different styles and patterns as well. The way of draping dupattas have also changed as compared to how it was worn before.

The word "kurta," or long "kurti," is used to refer to the modern styles of salwar kameez. Indo-western influences are apparent in these modern styles. In addition, Western countries have also embraced Kurtis, wearing them on trousers, jeans, and capris. The comfort of the outfit has paved the way for global acceptance, most especially among the youth group (those aged between 15 and 28 years old). Kurtis are all the rage today, and it has even spawned a more advanced form, called "Ponchu."
